Relationships
The early partnership with Papakura District Council (which later was amalgamated into Auckland Council) created the unique approach to both the public and private realm design and interface.
Approach
The project extended through the GFC and the upheaval of the local body council structure. A clear strategy, detailed planning and disciplined execution allowed the project to progress unhindered.
Outcome
Addison was the first acclaimed large scale, master planned residential development in New Zealand, leveraging best practice internationally. Our goal was to give residents what they wanted by researching behaviours, desires and key environment outcomes in a more intensive residential setting.

A 1200-home master-planned community following best practice urban design.
Location: Takanini, Auckland
Completion: 2003 — 2019
Addison was conceived as an ‘open plan neighbourhood’ with clusters of homes built around shared green spaces and wide berms where kids can play in the midst of suburban streets.
Back in 2003, Addison was a little radical. Aucklanders weren’t used to the idea of denser housing with an urban, park-like character. Since then the community has settled in, the urban designers have won awards and the homes have continued to grow in value, proving that Aucklanders have embraced this new style of the neighbourhood.
Addison delivered on key sustainability measures through efficient use of land centred around a future transport node, rainwater soakage and retention preventing disposal into the public stormwater system, and active waste reduction through the construction process.
